In February, 2007, I sent out an SOS request to all quilters who were in
South Texas asking for 12.5" x 12.5" unfinished blocks in red/white/blue - any
pattern of their choice - to be submitted for quilts for the Mom's of our local
fallen soldiers. It just seemed that the wives and children were always
taken care of, but I never heard anything that was being done for the
Moms. My request did not fall on deaf ears. We had a lot of our
local quilt bees and individuals bring in blocks, we had our "winter Texans" or
"snow-birds" as some may refer to them - who all overwhelmingly gave and
gave. Our store furnished the backing, the quilting, the binding and
delivered to 27 (to date) mothers of South Texas' Fallen Heros during the Iraqi
crisis in time for either Mother's Day or Memorial Day. Our label on the back read: To the Mother of a Valley fallen Hero
with love from South Texas quilters.
We were blessed with getting to meet these mothers and some of the
fathers. They shared stories of their sons - some about who they were
growing up and others of their death. In every meeting where a quilt
was given, we were given more than what we gave. We were greeted
with hugs, tears, and smiles.
I would encourage each quilt guild to consider doing such a project in your
area. It is something quiet rewarding - a gift, a quilt, from the heart is
something these families will forever cherish.
